13th competition for the Jan Rulf Award for the best work in the field of archaeology

The Institute of Archaeology of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Prague, would like to announce the 13th Jan Rulf Award competition for outstanding work in archaeology and related fields. The competition is open to young researchers. Authors or an institution may submit articles, monographs or theses. One institution may submit a maximum of five publications in each category (up to five publications or PhD theses and five Master’s and/or Bachelor’s theses).

Each submitted article/publication/thesis must meet the following criteria:

  • it is an original theoretical work in archaeology;
  • the work was either published or completed between 1 January 2023 and 28 February 2025;
  • the author has reached a maximum of 36 at the time of publication/completion of the work and the work was written/published in an EU country; if there are more co-authors, the candidate must be the first, or corresponding author;
  • the work with a cover letter containing the author(s)’ consent to be included in the competition will be delivered preferably in PDF format, if this is not possible, then in one hard copy, to the Institute of Archaeology in Prague by 31 March 2025 at the latest.

Works meeting the above conditions will be assessed by an ad hoc evaluation committee appointed by the Director of the Institute of Archaeology of the CAS, Prague, v. v. i. The evaluation will take into account the contribution of the work to the field, originality of the solution of the problem and methodological maturity of the procedure. The committee will determine the order of the papers; the first three papers will be awarded. In addition, the three best papers from the group of bachelor and master theses will be selected and awarded.

The best publication in the competition will be awarded 20 000 CZK, the second 15 000 CZK, and the third place will be awarded 10 000 CZK. The three best Bachelor’s and/or Master’s theses will be awarded 10 000, 7 000 and 5 000 CZK. The evaluation committee may propose to divide the award among several theses or not to fill a certain place in the ranking.

The award ceremony will take place on 25 June 2025 in the main building of the Academy of Sciences in Prague. The evaluation committee will recommend selected works for publication in the Institute’s journals. The submitted publications and manuscripts will be returned to the authors after the competition.
